Hip hop wasn't 100% socially concious back then. You still had guys like LL and Big Daddy Kane who were more or less the 50 Cents and Jay-Z's of the 80's
That's not an insult against any of those artists by the way. Kane was basically a smooth player lyricist like Jay is today. and like 50, LL wasn't exactly a lyricist, but he was certainly the superstar back then
